A new Compact branded range of products aimed at smaller sawmills was launched by Austrian sawmill technology manufacturer Springer at Ligna.

Springer, whose equipment includes handling, sorting and grading equipment, said the Compact flexible system was designed for mills with an annual capacity of up to 150,000m³.

Springer sales representative Jürgen Schmidt said the UK was an interesting market for Compact, because the mills were smaller than in Continental Europe.

Smaller mills, Springer believes, have an edge over their bigger counterparts at the moment because they have more local customers and are less dependent on international business. “They can react much more flexibly and quickly to changes,” it said.

The Compact range features Unipak sorting and stacking, with the modular machines pre-commissioned and electronics pre-installed at Springer for fast assembly on site.

Mr Schmidt said Ligna visitors were “feeling good”. “They were not talking about the crisis and were looking forward.”
