A PhD student at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College has developed a software package which makes it possible to evaluate sanding irregularities in isolation from inconsistencies in the wood itself.

Lidia Gurau, who has graduated from the High Wycombe-based college’s Forest Products Research Centre with a PhD in texture measurements of sanded surfaces, said her “package of algorithms for numerical analysis” contains information about how to measure and evaluate a sanded wood surface, as well as algorithims for evaluating measured data.

Dr Gurau said the package, which needs further development to make it into a user-friendly, commercial tool, opens new gates for control automation and optimisation of the sanding process for specific types of coating.
