“That times have been tough and challenging is a given,” said Simpson Strong-Tie’s (SST) Engineered Timber Division head, Jon Head. “The impact of the economic climate has reverberated through our roof truss connector business. However, we listened to our customers and in 2009 launched redesigned, enhanced versions of some of our truss connector range.

“Our customers wanted the THA adjustable truss hanger to be installed with the same nail type throughout, so we took a fresh look at it and now the product gives performance values using only square twist nails. With our Glide Shoe connector we looked at how the product installation could be improved, and developed a completely new version, which is now considerably easier to connect in one operation.

“Also, as part of our continued product review, we have added an SDS screw-compatible variant of our HGUS (Heavy Girder Hanger) to the range – the HGUQ – making it suitable for even heavier duty applications.”

These product developments have helped SST maintain steady business through the downturn and it reports encouraging signs of increased activity in 2010. Jon Head also attributes the gain in customer numbers to the company’s made-to-order service.

“Our made-to-order items can often be delivered direct to site the next day,” he said. “This is a huge benefit to our customers, who are under pressure to maintain building schedules without keeping unnecessary levels of inventory.”
