Door manufacturer FR Shadbolt & Sons Ltd has successfully tested its range of fire doors to the new European standard EN 1634-1.

The London company said it decided to embark on a testing programme after recognising that eventually all fire doors will have to be tested and approved to the new standard. EN 1634-1 is generally regarded as more demanding than the current BS 476: Part 22, which is to be phased out.

The recently published supplement to Approved Document B of the Building Regulations states that doorsets tested to EN 1634-1 will meet regulation requirements.

Shadbolt has carried out 18 full-scale tests and 25 smaller tests covering all aspects including glazing and hardware. The company said its doors exceeded the test criteria of 30 or 60 minutes by as much as 50%.
