SCM Group UK’s panel division has clinched an order worth more than £1m for a complete cabinet manufacturing plant for a Northern Ireland furniture maker.

The deal – the largest single order that the company has received – will see SCM install a range of machines that will enable the Belfast-based manufacturer Starplan to raise production to 10,000 cabinets a week. The various production ‘cells’ will give Starplan greater flexibility in its production planning.

The first production cell to be equipped by SCM will include a Gabbiani Axioma 115 angular panel cutting plant – said to be the first of its kind in the UK.

Fully automatic panel sizing in both the rip and cross-cutting modes will convert the melamine faced boards into accurately dimensioned panels. These will then be transported to a Mahros Ponte 250 panel stacking unit with six separate conveyor bays for stacking the various size panels before re-direction to a holding conveyor system.

Another cell with a Mahros feeder and stacker comprises a Stefani Major double-sided squaring, profile, edgebanding and soft-forming machine.

Further Mahros single and double-sided feeding and stacking units work alongside fully-automatic throughfeed drilling machines.

The most sophisticated production cell includes two highly specified Morbidelli CNC drilling and routing centres.

The Author 600LS Twins each have two router machining heads enabling two panels/doors to be machined simultaneously.

Panels are fed to the machines using a Mahros Climber and unloaded using a Fanuc robot.
