SAM Mouldings has become the first UK company to buy a horizontal Weima Leopard 600 shredder to reduce waste and fuel costs.

The company says the machine, which features a track feed system similar to a military tank, is saving up to £18,000 a year on disposal costs at its new factory at Antrim, Northern Ireland, in addition to lower fuel charges.

The Leopard shreds 5m long MDF trim cuts from two Holzma beam saws plus offcuts from cross-cutting door frames, mitre-sets and window boards.

Chips are then transferred to a 120m3 silo via a Cattinair dust extraction system before being burned with MDF dust in a CHP boiler system.

The shredder is handling about 20,000kg of solid waste material each week.
