The Edge IT control system for edging lines was one of Söderhamn Eriksson’s new innovations for helping customers achieve optimum timber yield.

The Swedish sawmill machinery firm, which is currently fulfilling its highest-ever value contract for James Jones & Sons Ltd, demonstrated the system on a high-speed edger at Ligna.

Edge IT measures boards simultaneously on both sides, with four scanner heads detecting defects. It calculates optimal recovery and provides 2D and 3D views of the board, as well as statistics, reports and alarms.

The system, based on network technology, works with Exeltec, Edgar and Millomatic edging lines and can be installed on existing installations.

Söderhamn Eriksson Ltd managing director Darren Oldham said the current James Jones contract at Lockerbie, involving a 150,000m³ capacity mill, was the company’s “biggest monetary value order ever taken” by the company.

The company is also promoting spiral conveyor technology, for moving chips, sawdust and fuel pellets, from supply partner PST. It says spirals’ advantages over belts and chain conveyors include minimal wear and maintenance, more space, higher capacity and low noise level.
