Kitchen and bedroom furniture manufacturer Roundel has equipped itself for the future by investing £1.5m-2m in machinery.

The company’s recent installation of a Homag KFL 526 combination edgebander is the latest in a long line of new technology to be commissioned at its main mill and assembly plant in Washington, Tyne & Wear, during the past two years.

As a result, it has been able to move forward and target a £10m annual turnover figure, 85% of which is in the contract sector.

Roundel turned to Homag to provide an integrated “family” of products, including two Holzma beam saws for sizing panels for downstream processing in the 20,000ft2 main mill. The Holzma HPL11 cuts boards in a high capacity scenario, while the more compact HPP380 is designed for smaller and more flexible dimensioning work.

Drilling, shaping, routing and cut-outs are performed on a Weeke CNC BHC350 machining centre for jobbing or customised work on certain products.

Components, shelves and other parts are edged on a Homag KFL260 combination edgebander, while the KFL526 machine is able to edge with ABS thick edgings right down to 0.4mm melamine.

A Ligmatech assembly line in the 60,000ft2 assembly plant consists of two MDE presses, integrated into the automated conveyor system which moves carcasses further into the factory for fitting and final packaging.

Factory manager Roy Ramshaw said Roundel also plans to spend £500,000-£1m on worktop production technology.
