The revised draft of BS 8417 Preservation of Timber – Recommendations will be released by the BSI for public consultation on November 1.

The revision was carried out by BSI committee B515 whcihis chaired by Wood Protection Association (WPA) chairman Chris Coggins.

The most obvious change is to the title of this draft standard, which now becomes known as BS 8417 – Preservation of wood – Code of practice. The name change is because the revision will supersede both the previous versions of BS 8417 2003 and A1 2007 as well as BS 1282:1999 Wood preservatives – Guide on choice, use and application.

“Much of the information in BS 1282 is out of date, but instead of updating this as a separate standard it was decided to update and move the important information into BS 8417 to make all guidance relating to industrial wood preservation available within one standard,” said WPA director Steve Young.

The public consultation period for the revised standard expires on December 31 and publication is expected in the first half of 2011.
