A FIRA-led research project is underway to develop a factory-applied powder coating for use in the exterior joinery market.

The initiative, also involving TRADA Technology and industry partners, aims to tap commerical opportunities of powder coatings in outdoor applications. So far, the UK furniture industry has concentrated on developing powder finishes for indoor uses.

The partners will work together to develop joinery protection strategies combining the quality and control of factory application with low VOC content, while still being able to provide a weather-resistant high performance finish. The coating being developed will not use solvents and will be designed to at least match the performance of conventionally-applied coatings.

Work currently underway involves reviewing available substrates and coating powders in order to select samples for the experimental process. A series of artificial weathering trials and laboratory tests will be held to verify the ability of the most suitable powder coating to protect external joinery.

Project partners include Dupont Powder Coatings UK, Nexfor, Eurotec Finishing Systems and MDF Specialised Coatings.
