The Swedish market for new and used forest machinery is “red hot” because of the devastation caused by severe January storms, according to organisers of the Elmia Wood Forestry Fair.

Elmia AB, which runs the June 1-4 show in Jönköping, said the buoyant market situation is also due to better economic conditions within international forestry.

Torbjörn Johnsen, Elmia project manager, said manufacturers are trying to redirect deliveries from other markets over to Sweden because of the 75 million m3 of timber felled in the storms. Contractors in the Baltic countries are also moving machines over to help deal with the windthrow.

However, Mr Torbjörn believes sales will shift to other countries around the Baltic after the summer.

He said international interest in this year’s forestry fair, Elmia Wood 2005, has never been so great.
