Industry giant Interfor is one of the world’s largest producers of western red cedar (WRC) and the UK market is providing a great opportunity to grow and diversify its markets. As a nation of garden lovers and one that has an increasing interest in “healthy” homes and a growing conscience for being environmentally responsible, WRC is seen as a perfect fit for the UK market.

As Garrick Jay, Interfor’s WRC group export manager said: “WRC is naturally durable and does not need chemicals to prevent it from decaying. Its fine grain machines well and its stability allows it to be used in all types of applications in any pattern or size. From conservatories, to exterior cladding, to outdoor decking, WRC is seen as a responsible and practical alternative as a building material.

“The life cycle analysis rates timber as the most environmentally responsible choice as a building material as compared to steel, brick, concrete or plastics,” he continued. “WRC comes from certified sustainable forests in British Columbia. Stringent environmental management systems (ISO 14001) and third party audits are used to verify compliance ensuring that WRC forests are being managed on a sustainable basis.”

In 2001 total exports of WRC exceeded 10 million fbm, or C$25m and 2002 figures are expected to show 10-20% growth. Interfor’s exports of WRC to the UK rose by 65% between 2001 and 2002.

Interfor has taken note of the increased interest for WRC in the UK and intends playing a more active role in promoting the species in the future. “We will be looking to continue the momentum and grow our business with our UK customers in both traditional rough sawn and added value finished or semi-finished products,” said Mr Jay.
