On July 3 the Timber Trades’ Benevolent Society (TTBS) National Golf Day welcomed 74 players to Forest Pines in North Lincolnshire. This is the highest number for many years and the TTBS is grateful for the support of so many players in these difficult times.

Although it has been traditional for the TTBS Golf Day to be played over 36 holes, as Forest Pines comprises three nine-hole courses, the morning singles competition was played over 18 holes on the Forest and Pines courses. In the afternoon the greensomes competition was played over nine holes on the Beeches course. Next year the competition will probably revert to the traditional format.

Funds raised

This year an eight-year rain-free run was broken by a light shower, but everyone enjoyed a good day’s golf. In the process £8,144 was raised for the Society’s funds thanks mainly to the efforts of Peter Hunt and his team at main sponsor Arbor Forest Products in persuading suppliers and others to sponsor individual holes and competitions such as the longest drive and nearest the pin.

After a celebratory dinner, the trophies and prizes were presented by Jason Ostler, director of Arbor Forest Products, and Ian North, TTBS trustee. Over £500 of the total raised came from the raffle held at the dinner. An auction prize of 18 holes of golf and lunch at Royal Lytham & St Anne’s for three players was kindly donated by Richard Taylor, a long-time supporter of the event who was unable to play this year, and this contributed £390 of the total raised on the day.

Planning is well advanced for next year’s event, which is expected to be on July 9 at St Pierre, near Chepstow. Look out for an announcement on the TTBS Pinboard in TTJ in coming months for further details.
