John Park’s letter (TTJ October 21) coincided with a visit to Scandinavia and the continent.

While the Timber 2000 promotion can do nothing but good, I seriously question if the general UK trade can deliver the product. Perhaps they should cross the channel or North Sea and see what the householder expects from their timber merchant, particularly as regards planed goods. Skirtings and architraves are not only dry for installation, but largely defect free and with standards of machining that make cutter marks almost invisible.

When visiting a timber merchant, I apply the 25×50 PAR test. If this is not of high quality, I go elsewhere – but not to a superstore which, alas, is all too often not offering quality.
