AkzoNobel’s Global AestheticCenter team draws on a variety of sources to develop its world-renowned ColourFutures design forecasts that apply across its Sikkens, Cuprinol and Dulux exterior and interior coatings and finishes range. Ideas and inspiration come from research groups, exhibitions, the worlds of fashion, technology, architecture, popular culture and social and economic trends.

The theme for 2014 is "Unlocking Potential" or, in the words of Heleen van Gent, head of the Global Aesthetic Center, "harnessing and exploring the possibilities found in everyday spaces, homes, offices, gardens".

Within this, teal was chosen as the Colour of the Year 2014 because "in sitting between blue and green it represents balance and versatility".

ColourFutures also identifies five broad colour design trends for exteriors and interiors and palettes of complementary shades for creating them in different environments.

Silent Revolution uses slight shifts in hue and tone to create delicate combinations of tinted white and neutral mid tones.

Urban Folk comprises robust shades "that feel familiar, but look new", inspired by such influences as cross-stitch embroidery.

Margin of Proof is described as a mature, measured neutral palette, inspired by natural materials like dark wood and marble, but accented with bright teal, scarlet and ochre.

Secret Garden (below) features misty shades and soft greens and lilacs, while Do It Now is an "energetic medley of colour".
