The cut-away display on PassiveWall’s stand illustrated how RTC Timber Systems has developed Scotland’s first Passivehaus (Timber & Sustainable Building Spring 2010).

The company’s patented closed panel system comprises an I-beam core with 9mm sheathing boards on both sides of the panel to contain the insulated core of recycled glass wool insulation (made from 80% recycled glass).

Externally the panel is supplied with a pre-fitted thermal foil building membrane and internally a pre-fitted thermal vapour barrier provides the main airtight seal.

A range of thicknesses meets clients’ U-value specifications, down to 0.14W/m²K which meets the Passivehaus standard.

Adding to its sustainability credentials, the majority of PassiveWall components are manufactured within a 40-mile radius of RTC’s Moray factory. The company plans to minimise the supply miles to the client by establishing manufacturing partners throughout the UK.

Director Bill Beaton said PassiveWall, especially its role in meeting the Passivehaus standard, had attracted interest from architects to self-builders.

Following PassiveWall’s Passivehaus success, it was highly commended in this year’s Daily Telegraph Homebuilding & Renovating Awards, which particularly pleased RTC, given the high calibre of the judges.
