Scottish shopfitter Grant Westfield has doubled its panel cutting capacity after buying a Holzma beam saw.

The saw, a £40,000-50,000 investment, has been installed in the company’s Edinburgh factory mainly to cut 9mm laminated plywood boards, which are used in cubicles, wall panels, laboratory units and shower panels.

The Holzma HPP350, supplied by Homag UK, has replaced an older Holzma HPP81 unit.

Other wood-based panels cut on the new machine include chipboard, MDF and MFC.

Paul McKenzie, Grant Westfield’s production director, said the Holzma features a “shark’s fin” side pressure alignment device, combined with a contactless magnetic encoding system on the programme fence, to boost dimensional accuracy. He said this was essential for downstream processes and final assembled/fitted products.

The Holzma achieves speeds of 5-130m/min on the saw carriage and 80m/min on the program fence, while six laminated panels can be cut in a book or single panels processed with postforming.

Grant Westfield has just ordered a double end tenoner from Homag UK and an Interwood press from Allwood Machinery will be installed shortly.
