Orion Packaging has specially designed and manufactured a machine to provide automated bubble-wrapping and shrink-wrapping at Swansea-based office and bedroom furniture manufacturer Remploy.

The technology has speeded up Remploy’s wrapping process, which was previously manual, and helped create more secure pallet loads. The company said it had been unacceptable for employees, who have a wide range of disabilities, to be expected to wrap a succession of irregular pallet-loads by hand.

The pit-mounted machine is based on Orion’s LP500 semi-automatic pallet-wrapper and features a 2m tower and 2.2m turntable with a dual delivery system for dispensing bubble wrap and other pre-stretch film.

Specially-written software enables the unit to bubble-wrap as an initial operation to protect furniture before following with stretch wrap to hold products on the pallet. The dual wrapping eliminates the need for expensive cardboard protection.

Remploy has now ordered a similar model for its Wrexham factory.
