Mark Hughes, QA consultant and lecturer with TRADA Technology Ltd for almost 20 years, died suddenly on January 9 at the age of 64.

A very popular member of staff, Mr Hughes will be remembered for his knowledge and experience of the timber trade, which he was able to share for the benefit of his younger colleagues, and for his ready sense of humour. He was always committed to his clients, to his colleagues and to the TTL Chiltern organisation, where he was chairman of the staff liaison committee as well as a trustee of the TTL Chiltern Pensions Fund.

Mr Hughes joined TRADA with 25 years’ experience in the wood based panels industry. On leaving school, he was indentured to Liverpool timber agent and broker Lloyd Duncan in 1958, moving on to Thomas Simson in Liverpool, then London. He joined Bambergers in 1980 and three years later joined UCM, supporting Brazilian and European plywood sales and developing door distribution.

At TRADA Technology, he was a key member of both the training and the quality assurance teams, developing and delivering training courses and helping to install quality management systems for client companies. In recent years, Hr Hughes’s work had frequently taken him to eastern Europe, where both his professionalism and his open, friendly approach to people were most appreciated.

He leaves a wife, two children and two grandchildren.
