Developments in insulation and fire safety have led Paslode Duo-Fast, part of Illinois Tool Works, to develop its 27x150mm staple specifically to cope with the latest industry demands for thicker insulation and fireboarding. It also has a 180mm-long staple on the drawing board.

The manufacturer of mechanical wood joining systems sees timber frame as its main focus and has been involved with the sector since the beginning of timber frame’s modern inception. Paslode introduced the first pneumatic tool, a light-duty upholstery tacker, in 1959 and, shortly afterwards, the first commercially accepted pneumatic nailer for the construction industry. The first cordless power nailer came on the scene in 1986.

“Insulation thicknesses are growing steadily and this was the reason behind our acquisition of Haubold in Germany,” said David Jordan, Paslode’s general manager for Europe. “Haubold has been very successful working in this area. The skill is in the tool design to meet the hand and arm, vibration and noise regulations.”

Young Black, the specialist distributor of collated fastening systems to the pallets and furniture sectors among others, has teamed up with Homag UK and Weinmann to offer a complete package for the manufacture of timber framed housing. Product manager Brian Morrison said timber frame is a main growth area and now accounts for about 40% of its business.

“We started selling the Power-Lite high pressure nailing tool for structural nailing of the frame about three or four years ago and it has proved very popular. They are fine tools, they are much lighter and quieter, they don’t push away from the material. These are for work on the benches and we have 110-volt tools for work on site for fixing timber to timber, and timber to concrete.”
