A Lincolnshire softwood mouldings manufacturer has invested about £250,000 expanding into the growing market for MDF mouldings.

Donington-based Select Timber Products has installed a Homag beam saw, Weinig Powermat moulder and ancillary equipment for MDF mouldings production.

The Homag beam saw is being used to cut large MDF sheets, varying from 12mm-30mm in thickness, for moulding on the Powermat 500.

Select Timber, which already has a Hydromat 23 moulder, is operating the Powermat with PowerLock tooling cutters and its existing conventional cutterblocks.

The Powermat, which can achieve tool speeds of 8,000rpm, incorporates a PowerCom memory system for memorising settings and recording all profiles previously run.

Select Timber’s production manager John Secker said the Powermat had given the company extra production flexibility and a quick setting-up facility to change easily from 12in wide profiles down to narrow 0.5in moulds.

The company processes orders on a CAD system before downloading them to a template maker and profile grinder to make the tooling.

David West, Select Timber’s managing director, said: “Our MDF mouldings have been received exceptionally well by customers – timber merchants and other moulding manufacturers, who outsource their non-standard profiles to complement their service.”

Select Timber was set up in 1990 to service the joinery linear mouldings market in non-standard profiles.
