Södra Timber is to invest SKr39m in dryers at its sawmill in Kinda, Sweden.

The 13 exisiting dryers, which are 40 years old, are to be replaced by two modern dryers, which will provide a capacity increase of 10,000m³ according to sawmill manager Dan Forslund.

“We have reached a cut-off point where it’s no longer profitable to maintain them, and replacement is necessary,” said Mr Forslund.

“They will also help lift the quality of our products, as the timber will be straighter and have fewer cracks.”

Heat produced by the new dryers will also allow Södra Timber to generate surplus energy through a waterborne heat recovery plant, which the company has said it will sell to the district heating system in nearby Kisa.

Mr Forslund added that the Kinda sawmill will also be replacing its rail-based overhead crane with trucks to improve the handling and transport of timber at the facility.
