The Wave Guard system, developed with help from the Flemish government, meets international phytosanitary standard ISPM 15 via rapid volumetric microwave heating.

The process is aimed at killing insects, larvae and eggs found in oak in less than four minutes.

Tests carried out in conjuction with Gembloux Agricultural University in Belgium found that microwave heating of every inch of oak eliminates the Lyctus wood beetle.

Taylor Maxwell Timber Ltd, which supplies Hoebeek products in the UK, says it can now sell Wave Guard treated timber.
