Stroud-based Olympic Varnish expects to double capacity following the purchase of equipment from Euro Decorative Boards (EDB), which closed in February.

The equipment, purchased for an undisclosed sum, includes a coating line, printing cylinder and routing machinery. It is currently being installed and should be operational within weeks.

EDB’s machinery was put up for sale after its parent company the Sonae Group decided to close the County Durham firm.

Olympic already has an up-to-date plant for coating and woodgraining thin MDF and hardboard but the new equipment will double capacity and enable it to offer taped folding backboards and drilled components.

Olympic’s managing director Bill Petyan said: ‘Although much of the EDB equipment is older than our own, we are confident that we can swiftly incorporate it into our operation in order to ensure as smooth a supply transition as possible, allowing continued supply to ex-EDB customers.’

Olympic processes both board and paper in sheet and reel form, supplying decorative paper wrap to moulding manufacturers and diecut boards to flatpack and upholstery manufacturers.
