US machinery manufacturer USNR’s Kiln Boss control system has helped Cox Industries revitalise its drying operations.

The system was initially installed alongside a new 54ft-long double track kiln at Cox Industries’ Orangeburg site but has been expanded to include the company’s four other kilns, featuring two masonry-style kilns installed in the 50s.

“We were actually considering tearing them down but now we have a speciality product that we’re running and those old kilns actually do a great job drying it,” said Lovett Kitchens, vice president of production at Cox Industries.

“USNR’s Kiln Boss control system also gives us better control over the drying process,” said Mr Kitchens. “The treating chemicals make it harder for us to achieve consistent drying, but Kiln Boss helps us in that way.”

The company recently installed a new double track dry kiln for producing southern yellow pine poles at its Cox Wood operation in Vance, Alabama.

Cox Industries is a family-run business that includes ten subsidiaries producing a range of pressure-treated wood products across the US.
