Keywood from Lonza Wood Protection is being marketed for a wide range of interior and exterior applications, from furniture, flooring and joinery, to cladding and decking.

The modified wood comprises number 1 clears radiata pine which has been impregnated with a biomass-derived resin – a process known as resinification.

The substance enters the cell walls, boosting biological and physical performance, says Lonza. It has a provisional durability class rating, giving a 60-year service above ground, outdoor service life, without the need for coating.

A recent Keywood application has been decking for a zero carbon house, which actually runs alongside a pond. Designer Alistair Baldwin said its combination of exotic hardwood looks, with easy working made it an ideal choice, as did its availability in wider boards. “The site is in open countryside, so it was important it took on an attractive weathered look from day one, and Keywood was also perfect for that,” he said.
