Door production at JELD-WEN‘s Sheffield factory is set to grow by 30% following a £1.5m investment in new door-trimming machinery.
The equipment, imported from US-based Progressive Systems, has replaced three older machines at the factory, which produces internal timber doors.
The company claims the new machinery has the highest capacity in Europe and can produce “more doors more efficiently” than the previous technology, which had a combined output of 45,000 doors per week.
JELD-WEN says the system will create production benefits on downtime, maintenance and consumable costs, and complements earlier investment in shrink-wrapping, edge-sanding and spray equipment at Sheffield.
Doorsets production manager Richard Dolben said: “This new investment projects us to the forefront of 21st century production capability in terms of speed, flexibility and quality.”
The door-trimming machine links with the recently-installed Titan automated production management software for more accurate computerised job-specification, planning and scheduling.
Four JELD-WEN staff visited the US for first-hand operating experience before the system was installed.
The company says the line contributes to JELD-WEN’s drive towards a more cost-effective lean manufacturing philosophy and creates a cleaner and quieter environment for staff.
