An increase in the shipment of forest products in containers and expansion of its terminal has prompted Interforest BV to place an order for its first ship-to-shore gantry container crane.

The acquisition will help the SCA-owned forest product handling and shipping company shorten ship turnaround times at the Rotterdam terminal and increase the number of ship visits.

Up until now containers have been handled by Interforest using vessels’ own cranes or those of neighbouring terminals, but this is no longer economical.

Interforest is to increase its 6.5ha of terminal space, which it rents from the Rotterdam Port Authority, to 18ha, including a 500m quay capable of servicing two ships simultaneously.

The gantry crane is scheduled for delivery on October 1 this year.
