The recently published HSE report on the Availability of Training in Wood Machining in the UK makes grim reading (TTJ April 28).
We were particularly concerned that as regards college education, the survey was restricted to colleges of further education. Higher education and universities were excluded. At Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College, we train some 90 graduates in furniture design and manufacture every year. This is hands on, full-time training equating to 270 students competing for machine access. No doubt other higher education establishments such as London Guildhall and Mancat feel similarly ignored.
