Softwood sawmiller Greenwood Forest has completed a £1.2m investment in a HAAS production line to increase production of animal bedding.

The machinery breaks down the mill’s waste wood fibre into particles of 12mm and smaller different sizes for bedding supplied to the pet, equine and farming sectors.

With sifting and baling equipment installed, Sheffield-based Greenwood does not have to sell shavings in bulk to shavings traders but can supply bales in sizes of 1-4kg direct to pet shops and supermarkets, as well as equine bales of 14-25kg and farming sizes of 20-250kg. It can also supply loose volume lorry loads.

“The investment in baling equipment has placed Greenwood at the forefront of an expanding, stable and exciting market that has seen sales expand as far away as Israel, Korea and Brazil,” said director Emma McClure.

An adjacent two-acre site recently acquired will be used for storing the bale products.

Greenwood’s sawmill principally supplies timber to the garden buildings industry. The Shedlands brand of garden buildings is now sold through the company’s retail arm McClure Timber Supplies.

Within the last month Shedlands has acquired a national distribution company of garden buildings to give it national delivery and installation service for the Shedlands range.
