More than 40,000 British Woodworking Federation (BWF) bwfgaptesters have been distributed to architects, building control officers and others involved in the building industry since the launch of the BWF’s Compatability Campaign.

The bwfgaptester is a 3mm thick pocket-sized card which confirms the gap between a fire door leaf and the frame is correct.

The gap must be wide enough to allow the door to operate correctly, but not too wide to prevent the intumescent seal from foaming to seal the gap in the event of a fire.

A mirror on one side of the card makes it easy to check that the top edge of the door has the BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Doorset scheme label which guarantees the door has been tested to work in a fire.

The BWF Compatability Campaign highlights the importance of using compatible components when installing fire doors. The BWF said to be effective a fire door should be seen as a complete assembly – door, door frame and hardware – and that the easiest way to achieve this is by obtaining a complete doorset which has been tested and certified as an integral unit.
