A West Midlands specialist adhesives manufacturer has taken delivery of three forklift trucks which feature flame protection systems designed to meet European safety directives.

The Nichiyu FTB20 leased vehicles operating at Chemique Adhesives & Sealant Ltd, incorporate FlameTec’s advanced infra-red gas detection system to meet EC directives ATEX 95 and 137, which stipulate equipment must meet health and safety requirements for applications in potentially explosive or flammable gaseous atmospheres.

The battery-powered trucks, supplied to Chemique’s Aldridge site by Second City Lift Truck Ltd, constantly monitor conditions via a micro controller and data logger.

At exposure to 10% of the lower explosive limit (LEL), the system gives a visual alarm, while at 15% an audible warning is sounded. If the operator ignores these and gas reaches 20%, the truck is automatically stopped and the power supply made safe.
