Growing demand for fire-rated doors in the public sector is requiring higher finishing standards in the joinery industry, according to wide-belt sanding machinery supplier Boere UK Ltd.

UK sales manager Geoff Pitcher said standards governing fire doors’ performance ratings were now complex and very specific, especially regarding the machining and finishing of glazing apertures and other architectural features.

A growing number of extra-wide doors were also being made in anticipation of European legislation on disabled access.

Mr Pitcher said fire-rated and non-standard doors required careful finishing on both face surfaces and edges, with delicate pre-finishing of matched veneers before initial coatings are applied.
