Demand for Nico’s egress friction hinges has doubled, fuelled by changes to Building Regulations in England which call for a mandatory emergency exit from windows in habitable rooms on upper storeys.

Nico managing director Martin Johnson said England has followed Scotland’s lead in the tightening of the fire egress building regulations. He added: “Although there are various ways of providing fire egress, egress friction hinges fitted to windows are an increasingly popular way of satisfying regulative requirements.”

The company’s Nico Easy Clean Egress hinge, which quickly provides the minimum required opening without catches or buttons, is especially important for the Scottish market where Building Regulations specify that any window above 4m must allow safe cleaning.
