A £2.3m fleet of cranes and handling equipment has been introduced at Associated British Ports‘ (ABP) five Welsh ports in anticipation of growing volumes of trade across key cargo sectors.

The equipment installed at Newport, Cardiff, Barry, Port Talbot and Swansea, includes two 160-tonne capacity Liebherr LTM 1160/2 all-terrain mobile cranes, a 36-tonne capacity Liebherr LHM 150 crane, a 36-tonne capacity Liebherr 1120 VG mobile harbour crane and a 20-tonne capacity Fuchs MHL 360 materials handler. ABP has also invested in 12 Toyota forklift trucks.

Business secured by ABP in 2003 includes an agreement with Scott Timber Group to grow its pallet business at Barry, while at Newport WestBank Timber has opened an import facility which will boost the port’s timber volumes.

Budha Majumdar, ABP South Wales’ port director, said: “This investment in cranes and handling equipment reflects the success of our South Wales ports. We are delighted to be growing our business by working closely with quality customers.”
