Derbyshire-based bedroom furniture manufacturer Contour Furnishings has improved production capacity by 20% after buying a Weeke Venture 3 CNC machining centre through Homag UK.

The £85,000 outlay in the Venture and ancillary dust extraction equipment represented the Ilkeston company’s single biggest investment to date and its biggest foray into automated machinery.

The Venture 3 was specified for its flexibility, as Contour produces cabinet systems for more than 4,500 door finish combinations.

Most of the machine’s work involves point-to-point drilling, plus routing, shaping and end drilling. Features include a 3250mm working field, the new Weeke LED clamp positioning system, a 7500rpm 19 vertical drill block, horizontal drilling in all X and Y positions and a vertical grooving saw spindle.

Contour Furnishings, which also makes a small but growing number of products for the home office market, started in 1987 when founder Alan Spibey made bedrooms for friends. It now has an annual turnover of about £600,000 and 11 staff.
