Timbmet group commercial director Jeremy Bristoe recently completed a hazardous trek to the summit of Mulhacen in the Sierra Nevada to raise money for Mind, the mental health charity that works to create a better life for those who suffer from mental distress.

After a day of acclimatisation and assessment, only the most physically fit were allowed to set out for the climb. However, the challenge proved tougher than expected as unusually severe weather resulted in a nine-hour trek through freezing blizzards until the group reached their refuge for the night at 10,000ft.

The following morning, with the weather progressively deteriorating, the group were forced to abandon their attempt at the summit, a relatively simple ascent under normal circumstances. Instead they began an 18-mile, 11-hour hard trek through the snow back to the nearest village.

Despite the difficult conditions, Mr Bristoe said it was a rewarding experience.

“It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life,” he said. “The physical challenge was intense and gave me a real sense of achievement but it was the amazing people I met who inspired me most – people who normally struggle to get through every hour, yet came off that mountain different, more confident people. It opened my eyes to many of the problems faced by some people and the courage they need to live day to day.”

He also thanked his sponsors who helped him raise £5,000 for Mind.
