In the wake of recent serious incidents involving fork lift trucks, the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) is offering training to companies.

The federation said the cost of untrained or out of practice employees operating heavy equipment and causing an accident could be catastrophic to companies.

A large DIY chain has recently been fined £710,000 after a customer was crushed to death by a fork lift truck, and a timber merchant was prosecuted after an employee was run over by one.

The BMF said the incidents cost the companies £1m between them, and advised that the risk of incident or near miss could be minimised by using a trained banksman.

For information about the training available, contact the BMF on 0870 901 3380.
