Engineered timber building specialist B&K Structures was awarded the runner-up prize in the UK Green Building Council’s Ecobuild sustainable stand awards despite only entering at the last minute.

The sweeping cross-laminated timber and glulam structures was made almost entirely of PEFC-certified timber and all components were made on a re-useable basis. A carbon calculator was also used in the design stage.

B&K’s Alan Wildsmith told TTJ that the company is currently tendering to build nine London fire stations, with the first pitch for three stations imminent.

It has also won the contract to extend the UK Athletics Centre in Edmonton, north London, where Olympic athletes will train.

“Attending Ecobuild has been worth every penny spent,” said Mr Wildsmith. “The quality is very high and we have had 400-450 visitors on the stand.”
