Joinery manufacturer George Barnsdale & Sons Ltd plans to continue its machinery investment programme by adding two moulders to its Spalding plant.

The company, a member of the British Woodworking Federation, will spend £80,000 on the moulders and tooling to add to its growing stable of hi-tech machinery. Equipment introduced during the past three years includes a Biesse CNC machining centre, a Stegherr cross-profiler, forklift trucks and other machinery, costing a total of around £200,000.

Barnsdale managing director Stephen Wright said the Biesse is helping machining flexibility, enabling the company to make almost any profile, and reduces labour costs. He believes Barnsdale is one of only a handful of joiners to use a CNC machining centre in production of windows.

“The six-metre bed and CAD/CAM technology is resulting in far quicker and more consistent manufacturing and has led to an increase in turnover by around 50%.”

The Biesse, purchased to speed up window production, also produces tailor-made staircases, resulting in lower fitting costs due to the precision of the pre-machined parts.
