Companies in the Baltics are increasingly investing in the latest moisture measurement technology as a means to ensure the quality and value of their wood, according to Brookhuis Micro-Electronics.

Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian companies are amongst those worried about the issues of shrinkage and expansion in wood, which could impact on their plans to export more timber to the European market according to the Dutch measurement machinery manufacturer.

This includes wood sorting equipment and hand-held moisture meters such as Brookhuis’ FMI sorting system and FMW hand-held range, which allow wood’s moisture content to be checked at all stages of production.

“The strict European Standards mean that they run the risk of compensation claims if the moisture content is incorrect,” said Martin Born, international sales engineer at Brookhuis.

“As a result, more and more companies are buying a good in-line sorting system in addition to their basic machines.”

Mr Born’s recent visit to the Baltics included a trip to Stora Enso’s factories, where he was able to carry out training and adjustments to optimise their equipment.
