An AXYZ 4008 series CNC router has allowed Loughborough-based Patterns & Moulds Ltd to boost production and take on more intricate work.

The company, which makes moulds for pre-cast concrete out of various materials including timber, opted for an AXYZ machine after winning a contract to supply 17 large moulds to make slabs for BBC television presenter Diarmuid Gavin’s garden at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Patterns & Moulds’s existing five-axis CNC router could not cope with the order size and timescales demanded.

The 4008, which features a processing area of 2440x1466mm and an automatic toolchanger equipped with an eight port carousel, is being used to make MDF and plywood formers and components for moulds with complex geometric shapes.

It has enabled the company to produce finer work, such as moulds for engraved text in signage and location maps at the new Scottish Parliament building in Edinburgh.

The 4008 series CNC router is available from £25,000.
