A Morbidelli CNC throughfeed borer has helped furniture maker Roneo President Ltd move more into short batch production.

The Morbidelli Author 912 CNC point-to-point machine, sourced from Leeds-based Machine Sales Ltd, has been installed at the company’s factory in Dunstable, Bedfordshire.

The company’s move back to Morbidelli machinery stems from its decision to move away from non-CNC traditional multi-borers with long set-up times to a double 800mm panel machine.

Nowadays, President has reduced average batch production to around 35 units.

Quality improvement manager Martin Norwood said the machine represented a “substantial capital investment”.

He said: “The nature of the market – a downturn in large-scale batch production in favour of small batch production – has meant that we now make or order rather than build up stock.

“Furthermore, we no longer have money tied up in holding large stocks of panels and work in progress has also been considerably reduced.”

President’s Author 912 can work two panels at a time and is able to carry out end boring while also doing face boring.

The company said the machine’s panel programs could be changed in just 50 seconds.
