When used externally, wood is exposed to all manner of destructive influences, from fungi and insects to the damaging effects of the weather, rain or shine.
Vacuum pressure treatment with our chrome-free and arsenic-free Wolmanit CX provides wood with the protection it needs to survive in its intended function for many years. Once treatment and fixation has taken place, Wolmanit CX adopts a clean and fresh-looking green colour, or by using a colour additive, a long-lasting brown appearance.
In the field, Wolmanit CX has a good track record and the extensive studies we have undertaken, that support registrations in many countries, confirm that the product is an effective preservative formulation.
Breathing material
However, wood is a hygroscopic material, meaning it breathes, absorbs moisture, then gives it off again to dry air. This is a process that repeats, eventually leading to cracks appearing in the wood. It was to tackle this problem that we developed another product – Wolmanit WR.
The latter is a water repellent for Wolmanit CX products. It is designed to provide treated wood with additional protection by reducing the moisture it is able to absorb, thus limiting the fluctuation of moisture content.
When the water repellent is added to the Wolmanit CX impregnating solution, it penetrates during the vacuum process deep into the timber, along with the preservative solution. Wolwax wood (wood that has been treated with both Wolmanit WR and Wolmanit CX preservative) has been shown to have reduced levels of swelling and shrinking.
Once the preservative has become fixed in the wood – and this occurs quickly and at almost any temperature – long-term weatherproof protection is assured. This means lasting protection for wood used in high hazard situations, including gardens and landscaping.
High hazard protection
Adding Wolmanit WR to the Wolmanit CX impregnating solution reduces moisture absorption, which not only prolongs the wood’s service life, but also generally enhances its appearance. The preservative improves the wood’s colour stability and provides its surface with a visible water beading quality.
For many kinds of timber, such as that used in gardens and landscaping, the addition of Wolmanit WR to the Wolmanit CX impregnating solution provides an alternative to treating the wood’s surface with a conventional water repellent. For one thing, the need for regular maintenance, such as the repeated application of protective oils, or waxes to terrace decks, can be minimised.
