A 300kW refurbished biomass heater was part of a full turnkey waste wood solution supplied by Fercell Engineering Ltd to Ardmore Construction’s joinery division.

Ardmore, one of the largest privately-owned UK construction companies, wanted its Enfield joinery division to have a zero landfill policy for its dust, shavings and end wood waste.

The project, which has brought savings of more than £100,000, included refurbished equipment from Fercell, which specialises in rejuvenating inefficient dust extraction systems, biomass burners, shredders and briquetters, as well as supplying new equipment.

For phase one, Fercell upgraded a multi-filter extraction unit in size and function to incorporate a screw feed and alternative rotary valve along with fan and ducting to the cyclone and a 100m³ heater silo feeding a refurbished 300kW (1 million Btu) warm air burner. Changes to dust extraction ducting were made to incorporate the output from a Weima WL4, 18.5kW single shaft shredder which processes all production end wood.

Joinery manager Dennis O’Sullivan said he was pleased with the savings of refurbished machinery. The second phase involving more refurbished plant will reduce the payback period to 30 months.
