National secretary Alan Watkins said that visitors to the PEFC stand were aware of the scheme and interested in environmental certification generally.

“We’ve seen architects and other specifiers, and a lot of student architects,” he said. “We got some of the usual questions about the difference between us and the FSC, but there was good recognition of the PEFC and, particularly, a lot of interest in chain of custody. It showed it is a very current issue for specifiers.”

Also on the stand were the PEFC-accredited Malaysian Timber Council Certification Scheme and US Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).

Sheam Satkuru-Granzella, director of the Malaysian Timber Council London, reported visitors “asking how to obtain certified timber from Malaysia – there was a lot of genuine interest”.

SFI president and chief executive Kathy Abusow said visitors wanted to know “how we can assure guilt-free purchases”.
