Associated British Ports (ABP) has invested more than £700,000 in handling equipment at the Port of Ayr, home to a green initiative designed to reduce timber movements by road.

The equipment will handle forest products as part of TimberLink, which aims to increase the use of sea transport as an alternative to road haulage.

ABP’s investment includes a Liebherr 974b excavator crane, a Liebherr 580 loading shovel, a Manitou MLT 845 tele-handler and a Ford multi-purpose light tipper.

Matt Jukes, ABP port director, short-sea ports, said: “Short-sea ports need the right equipment in order to handle the extremely wide variety of trades that pass through them. Our investment in Ayr will ensure that the port is suitably equipped and ready to face the future.”

Alastair MacFarlane, ABP’s Ayr & Troon port manager, said the equipment would benefit all the port’s customers.
