The strategy is to work with the private sector and rainforest countries to address economic and commercial drivers of deforestation, a government spokesperson said.
During the event, the government announced a new £15m programme under the International Climate Fund to develop climate change mitigation plans and poverty alleviation in Colombia.
This involves supporting smallholder farmers to plant trees on cattle grazing land, to increase biodiversity and protect local forests.
The summit coincided with the climate change talks taking place in Qatar, on progress toward reaching agreement on how to address climate change, including the reduction in deforestation.
Prince Charles said it was only by all sectors of society working together – public, private and civil society – that sufficient action could be achieved.
“Progress is going to prove very difficult unless we all work together to find and then implement the solutions. This is why I am so heartened by today’s meeting,” he said.
The Prince of Wales, through his International Sustainability Unit, has been working to build consensus on how to curb deforestation.
The unit works with governments, the private sector and NGOs, while the Prince’s Rainforests Project was set up in 2007.
