Finland’s first all weather terminal at the Port of Kokkola was officially opened by the minister of transport and communications Leena Luhtanen last week.
The terminal, built at a cost of €20m, allows cargo to be loaded and unloaded completely under cover and protected from the harsh winter weather. It measures 132x62m and houses a 50-ton bridge crane.
Port director Torbjorn Witting said the covered terminal would improve efficiency and allow the port to increase annual capacity by one million tons.
The port, which has a service to Rochester and Belfast every three weeks, handles around 400,000m3 of sawn timber and 20,000 tonnes of plywood a year.
