Hardwood markets and marketing will be the theme of this year’s American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) conference to be held in Venice in October.

Italy is one of AHEC’s key markets – in 2003 US hardwood lumber exports to the country increased in value by 8.4% and veneer by 6.4% with a combined total of US$114m, and the Italians consumed the widest range of species of any European market.

The convention, which kicks off with a welcome event on the evening of October 20, will aim to assess the markets in Europe and discuss the challenges that lie ahead. Presentations and debates will focus on economic issues, environmental developments, hardwood supply and demand and promotion.

David Venables, AHEC European director, said Venice is likely to be a popular venue with members and the European hardwood trade.
